For trips such as Casablanca–Rabat, Marrakech–Agadir or Tangier–Rabat, you often have a choice between the train, the bus and carpooling. No single option is the best everywhere: it depends on the route, the time of day and what matters most to you.
The train: fast on the main routes
The ONCF network connects the major cities along the Atlantic and northern routes, and Al Boraq, the high-speed train, puts Tangier a little over two hours from Casablanca. The train is punctual, comfortable and often the fastest way between two city centers.
Its limits: it does not serve the whole country. There is no train to Agadir, for example. The lowest fares are often non-flexible tickets, and you still have to reach the station at the start and end of your trip.
The bus: everywhere, and often cheap
Companies such as CTM or Supratours, along with many private operators, serve almost every city. The bus is often the cheapest option, and on some routes it is the only one available.
On the other hand, the trip takes longer, buses leave from a bus station, and timetables are fixed.
Carpooling: door to door, with shared costs
Carpooling has other advantages. The pickup and drop-off points are agreed with the driver: a neighborhood, a gas station, sometimes your front door. Departure times are more varied, including early in the morning or late in the evening. And the price covers a share of the trip's costs, fuel and tolls, which makes it competitive on long distances.
Its limits are real too. You need to find a driver making the same trip on the same day, which is not guaranteed. And the experience depends on the people you travel with, so take the time to read our safety tips.
Compare your route
Prices change depending on the day, the travel class and the company. Rather than publish figures that will go out of date quickly, we built a comparison tool. For each main route, it shows the price and travel time for the train, Al Boraq and the bus side by side, along with the suggested carpooling contribution.
In short
- Are you traveling from one station to another on a route served by Al Boraq? The train is hard to beat on travel time.
- Is your budget tight and do fixed timetables not bother you? The bus is often the cheapest.
- Are you heading to a city without a train, leaving from an outlying neighborhood, or wanting to leave at a specific time? Carpooling is often the best option.
- Are you a driver? Offering your free seats lowers the cost of your own trip.
